Amplified Intelligence: Machines as Brain Boosters - Space.com  When Ken Ford ponders AI, he thinks of boosting human brainpower through Amplified Intelligence, using machines to augment human cognition. It's a less lofty goal than creating Artificial Intelligence, but also one that's more realistic. Ford runs the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of Human & Machine Cognition (IMHC) at the University of West Florida. His work spearheads a vision to address how humans interact with machines.
Talking PointIs the world too dependent on oil?  - BBC  Opec is pumping a record 30 million barrels of oil a day, and could boost that by another 1-1.5 million barrels if needed, its president, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, has said. This comes after oil prices broke new records overnight as Asian trade pushed a barrel of New York light sweet crude close to $45. The latest rises are causing worries in importing countries about the economic cost of higher energy prices. The International Energy Agency, told BBC News Online that oil at $35 a barrel - the average for the past year - would take half a percentage point off global growth.

Red Planet had 'recent' volcanism  - BBC  Mars appears to have been volcanically active more recently than previously supposed, according to growing evidence from Europe's Mars Express orbiter. New estimates suggest volcanoes could have been active between one million years ago and 20 million years ago, but more work is needed to refine the dates  Previous spacecraft data suggested that volcanism on Mars ceased some time around 600-500 million years ago. Some researchers even speculate Mars could be volcanically active today. Mars Express project scientist Agustin Chicarro said some volcanoes were "extremely young" based on current data.
