X Prize Hints At Space Race - Space.com   A media alert was issued today by the X Prize Foundation of St. Louis, Missouri noting that “several key announcements” are to be made July 27. The $10 million Ansari X Prize cash award will be turned over to the first team that privately finances, builds and launches a three-person spaceship that scoots up to 62.5 miles (100 kilometers) altitude, returns safely to Earth, repeating the feat with the same ship within two weeks.
Analysis: A New Era Of Defense For Japan - SpaceDaily  In the aftermath of World War II, Japan pledged to forever renounce war, writing into the Constitution a prohibition against maintaining any military forces or other war-making potential. In the post-9/ll era, however, members of the Japanese Parliament now say that an amendment allowing the formation of armed forces is both critical and inevitable. During the Cold War, Japan armed itself with the Self-Defense Forces, which it argued were admissible under the constitution, and which international law establishes as a guaranteed right of any nation.

Cool Fuel Cells Could Revolutionize Earth's Energy Resources - SpaceDaily  Imagine a power source so small, yet so efficient, that it could make cumbersome power plants virtually obsolete while lowering your electric bill. A breakthrough in thin film solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is currently being refined in labs at the University of Houston, making that dream a reality. Putting this into perspective, the size equivalent of four sugar cubes would produce 80 watts – more than enough to operate a laptop computer, eliminating clunky batteries and giving you hours more juice in your laptop. Approximately two cans' worth of soda would produce more than five kilowatts.
