Image of cannabis 'Cannabis' brain tumour drug hope   - BBC  An ingredient in marijuana may be useful for treating brain cancers, say Spanish researchers from Madrid. Chemicals called cannabinoids could starve tumours to death by halting the growth of blood vessels that feed it, the Complutense University team hope. By studying mice, the team has shown for the first time how these chemicals block vessel growth. Their study, published in Cancer Research, also shows the treatment appears to work in humans. "The present findings provide a novel pharmacological target for cannabinoid-based therapies," said Dr Guzmán.
Woman using wi-fi internet access in a cafe Wireless net to get speed boost  - BBC  Wireless networks could soon be running 10 times faster than they do now. Competing technology groups are proposing different ways to speed up the data rates of wi-fi which could reach 540 megabits per second. The battling technologies, called WWise and TGn Sync, are being assessed by the US organisation that rubber stamps improvements to wireless technology. Both proposals to speed up wi-fi exist largely on paper and could take years to find their way into hardware. Final decisions on the 802.11n standard are not expected before 2007.

Hungry world 'must eat less meat'  - BBC  World water supplies will not be enough for our descendants to enjoy the sort of diet the West eats now, experts say. The World Water Week in Stockholm will be told the growth in demand for meat and dairy products is unsustainable. Siwi says: Animals need much more water than grain to produce the same amount of food. "With about 840 million people undernourished or lacking a secure food supply today, and another two billion or more people... by 2025, feeding the world's growing population - and finding the water to grow the food - continues to be a basic and sizeable challenge."
