Suborbital Dreams: One Year After SpaceShipOne's Historic Flight - Space.com Based on NASA’s X-34 program, Dream Chaser’s current incarnation is that of an orbital spacecraft, though initial plans called for a suborbital version. “We’ve changed our focus from suborbital to orbital,” explained Jim Benson, SpaceDev CEO founding chairman He hopes SpaceDev’s Dream Chaser, which could make its first suborbital manned flight by 2008, could be ready in time to be considered as a potential launch vehicle for NASA. |

Physicists Clarify Exotic Force, But No 'Theory Of Everything' Yet - SpaceDaily Left: Casimir force tips the balance - This experiment measures the Casimir force between a metallized plate and a metallized sphere fixed to the tip of the cantilever of an atomic force microscope. When the sphere is brought near to the plate, an attractive Casimir force causes the cantilever to bend. This bending is monitored by bouncing a laser off the top of the cantilever and using photodiodes to record the reflected light. Their experiment, which involves the behavior of a minuscule gold ball as it moves over different substances, shows that gravity behaves exactly as Isaac Newton predicted, even at small scales. |

Synthetic Aperture Radar May Soon Be Used For Reconnaissance On Small UAVs - SpaceDaily Researchers at the National Nuclear Security Administration's Sandia National Laboratories flew what is probably the world's smallest fine-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in May, making real-time images from the 6-kilometer range with a resolution of four inches. It was a first for the 25-pound instrument that may soon be used for reconnaissance on near-model-airplane-sized unmanned aerial vehicles.MiniSAR is less than one-fourth the weight and one-tenth the volume of SARs that currently fly on larger UAVs such as the General Atomics' Predator. |
