Japan, NASA to Discuss Supersonic Jet - Space.com  Stung by repeated setbacks, Japan's space agency plans to start talks next month with NASA about jointly developing a supersonic successor to the retired Concorde, an official said Monday. Japan is trying to leapfrog ahead in the aerospace field with a plan to build a next-generation airliner that can fly between Tokyo and Los Angeles in about three hours. But a string of glitches has led the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to look for an international partner.
UFO study finds no sign of aliens  - BBC  Left:  The 400-page report was kept secret for six years. A confidential Ministry of Defence report on Unidentified Flying Objects has concluded that there is no proof of alien life forms. In spite of the secrecy surrounding the UFO study, it seems citizens of planet Earth have little to worry about. The report, which was completed in 2000 and stamped "Secret: UK Eyes Only", has been made public for the first time. The 400-page report puts it like this: "No evidence exists to suggest that the phenomena seen are hostile or under any type of control, other than that of natural physical forces."

Sculpture fatwa: Muslim ruling on Egyptian statues stokes controversy  - BBC  A religious ruling condemning the display of statues has angered Egyptian liberals and intellectuals who fear it could encourage religious zealots to attack the country's pharaonic heritage The ruling was issued by the Mufti, the most senior religious scholar in Egypt. Islam has always been wary of representations of the human figure. Anything which could even remotely suggest idolatry is frowned upon. But sculpture in Egypt is as old as the pharaohs. There are thousands of statues in museums and temples, not to mention the modern works standing in major squares in the big cities. The fatwa raised an outcry, with many critics saying they are surprised the issue has been raised at all. But these days Egyptians are increasingly seeking religious rulings on all aspects of life. Fatwas are proliferating in the newspapers, on the internet and on satellite channels. "There's been really a big retreat to the distant past." Egyptian society is witnessing a huge explosion in demand for fatwas.
