Airborne laser weapons Airborne laser brings 'Star Wars' a step closer  - C/Net  The High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS), being designed by the Pentagon's central research and development agency, will weigh just 1,650 pounds and is about the size of a large refrigerator. To date, such lasers have been so bulky, because of the need for huge cooling systems to stop them from overheating, that they had to be fitted to large aircraft such as jumbo jets, New Scientist magazine reported Wednesday. But DARPA reckons it has solved the problem by merging liquid and solid state lasers to cut the size and weight by "an order of magnitude."
The Legend of Rongo Rongo - Space.com   We had come to study the humpback whales, specifically to record their social and working vocalizations—they may be the most complex in the animal kingdom. We have recordings of humpbacks that sound just like wolves howling, monkeys barking, dolphins whistling, cows mooing, lions roaring, elephants trumpeting, and even humans talking, along with numerous additional bubbling, gurgling, screeching, groaning, and burping sounds unique to their own repertoire.

Scientists Find That Protein Controls Aging By Controlling Insulin  - Science Daily  Therapies based on this hormone could prove to be a way to extend life or slow its effects, said Dr. Makoto Kuro-o of the UT Southwestern Medical Center. For the current study, they created a second strain of mutant mice in which the Klotho gene generated more of the protein than in normal mice. Those mice lived between 19 percent to 31 percent longer than normal mice. The researchers were especially interested in how the hormone affected insulin, because making an animal resistant to insulin increases its lifespan - a phenomenon found in animals ranging from worms to fruit flies to mice.
