Olives Scientists believe olive oil may be nature's painkiller  - BBC  Researchers found 50g of extra-virgin olive oil was equivalent to about a tenth of a dose of ibuprofen. The team said while the effect was not strong enough to cure headaches, it may explain the Mediterranean diet benefit. The active ingredient - found in greater concentrations in fresher olives - is called oleocanthal and inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in inflammation in the same way as ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs. "We believe it has some antioxidant properties, but to say it mimics a drug is taking it one step further and needs more research."
California's Sunny Future Under Threat - SpaceDaily  On September 9, a critical piece of legislation will be voted on in the Californian Assembly that will determine the immediate future of the solar electricity industry in the United States. Known as SB1, the program is an initiative of Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and aims to install solar electricity systems on the roofs of one million homes and business across California by 2016. Funding the installation of some 3,000 megawatts of peak power capacity generated from solar photo voltaic power systems, Californian will not need to build costly base load plants to meet afternoon demand spikes.

Christians draw swords on climate  - BBC  A new UK organisation hopes to combat climate change through harnessing the political power of the church. Its key demands are: the UK government must make climate change a top international priority so that global warming is capped at a temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This will require global emissions to have peaked and be irreversibly declining by 2015, and the UK government must deliver substantial annual reductions in UK greenhouse gas emissions, meet its target of cutting CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010 and commit to an EU-wide greenhouse gas reduction target of 30% by 2020
