Seeing a New World - ABC Left: On the left, what people suffering from macular degeneration see, and on the right, what patients with the implanted mini telescope would see. (ABCNEWS.com) Tiny telescope could one day help millions see better. An estimated 8.7 million Americans, nearly all seniors, are affected by macular degeneration. Rodgers is among the 1.6 million within that group who have an advanced form of the disease. For Americans over the age of 55, macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness. Rodgers is now part of a 200-patient clinical trial for a device called the IMT, or implanted miniature telescope. |

Hubble detects 'oldest planet' - BBC Thirteen billion years ago, a planet, 2.5 times the size of Jupiter, formed around a young star in a globular cluster that was one of the first generation of stars to emerge after the Big Bang. The star is locasted in Scorpius, about 5,000 light-years away. Through a series of remarkable encounters with other stars, the new planet, along with its now dying parent star, have been propelled into a region of space where they have finally been observed. Their story - along with the finding of planets around nearby, isolated, stars - means that our galaxy, and the wider Universe, is probably teeming with planets. |

Skin cancer treatment hope - BBC Knocking out a key enzyme may provide a new way to prevent and treat skin cancer, say experts. The enzyme, called JNK2, has been shown to play a pivotal role in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers. A team from the University of Minnesota believes that disrupting the function of JNK2 could break a vital link in the complex chain of chemical interactions that lead to the growth of skin tumours. Lead researcher Dr Zigang Dong said even a few minutes of exposure to ultraviolet sunlight was enough to stimulate JNK activity in the epidermal cells of the skin. |
