From Big Bang to big bucks From Big Bang to big bucks  - C/Net  Back in the early 1960s, Arno Penzias and a colleague at Bell Labs, Robert Wilson, set out to study radiation emissions in the Milky Way. During their observations, their horn antenna kept picking up an inexplicable, ubiquitous background noise. This turned out to be a remnant of the Big Bang, and the two won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1978. Now, as a venture partner in New Enterprise Associates, he seeks out and advises start-ups, particularly those specializing in alternative energy.
Fertile women have a nose for dominant men, a sniff test shows  - BBC  Women subconsciously prefer the aroma of dominant men when they are at the most fertile stage of the menstrual cycle, research suggests. But the rest of the time they probably prefer potential social partners. Women at other stages of their menstrual cycle - single or not - did not pick out dominant men in the same way. World's largest telescope begins with a spin - New Scientist  Expert mirror makers are gearing up to cast the first component of what is planned be the world's largest telescope. When completed, its seven 8.4-metre mirrors will more than quadruple the power of today's best observatories. It will have 10 times the resolving power of the Hubble Space Telescope. The telescope, planned to be built in northern Chile, is expected to take a decade to complete if it receives the necessary funding. the GMT will arrange its multiple mirrors into a single "super dish” - with one mirror at the centre and the other six curved around it
